Glossary of Terms

We try our best not to use too much jargon when describing our services, but if you do come across something your not sure of, you should find a definition of what it means here.

Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transmitted via a given communications channel (eg, between your disk space on a Web server and the site visitor's PC) in a given unit of time - usually per month. For example, if 1000 visitors download a 1MB file 1000MB of bandwidth will have been used. 1MB would also be used uploading the file.
CMS
Content Management System. Grelb is a CMS, but we now refer to it as a WCM (Web Content Management) as it only manages web content. CMS solutions seem to now be for larger-scale roles such as enterprise Intranets.
HTML
Hypertext Markup Language is the language that the Web is written in.
IPS Tag
The actual true meaning of IPS Tag was created and lost with Nominet UK's predecesor the Naming Commitee, however it is widely accepted that it probably stands for Internet Provider Security Tag.
ISP
An ISP is a business that provides an individual with access to the internet. Some methods of providing this service are through dial-up telephone, cable, or high-speed DSL circuit.
Iterative Development
Repetitive or cyclical. Iterative software development involves the completion of project tasks or phases in repetitive cycles. Tasks and phase activities are repeated until a desired result is achieved.
MySQL
MySQL is a simple, yet powerful Open Source Software relational database management system that uses SQL. For more details, see www.mysql.com.
PHP
PHP is a recursive acronym for "PHP Hypertext Preprocessor". It is an open source, interpretive, HTML centric, server side scripting language.
W3C
The World Wide Web Consortium
WCM
Web Content Management. Grelb WCM is our Web Content Management solution which we used to call Grelb CMS. However CMS solutions now seem to be more tailored to large-scale roll outs such as enterprise Intranets where documentation management is an issue.
